The Poetry Experiment//Joe Diodato QUARTET//Morrell//CASCA//Eponine

Friday 13th December 2019
Tickets £9.00

This is a new artistic project blending spoken word poetry with the sounds of neo-soul, hip-hop, jazz and electronic music. We draw heavily from the musical styles of Robert Glasper, Kendrick Lamar, Terrace Martin and Hiatus Kayiote, as well as the poetry of Noname, Nick Makoha and Gill-Scott Heron.
Having met at a Durham arts event called Thorn in November as separate acts, we got talking and decided to work together to come up with something that would be a little unique. After several months and jamming sessions, we’ve created an original set that deals with topics of responsibility, childhood, race, religion and hope over a variety of sounds, tempos, flows and melodies.

Joe Diodato's career in music started at the age of 18, singing and playing piano in his home town of Naples, in Italy. In that time up, until the age of 20 he played gigs around Italy. By the time he was 21 he was singing with MSC cruises and began to see more of the world, and more of what Jazz could offer him. He moved to Buenos Aires at the age of 24 and immersed himself into the local scene gigging in the local bars and clubs.
In December 2017 he moved to London and after few months he formed a Jazz Trio in hope of moving into the London Uk Scene. With his Trio he has been gigging in various London's venues. In September 2018 he formed a Quartet to record and promote his first EP "Ma' Groove".
“Ma' Groove” was released in June 2019. It combines classic jazz and swing with contemporary funk and soul, and was influenced by Joe's collaboration with emerging artists from the London jazz scene. It has been recorded by JD QUARTET consisting of Benjamin Crane (bass), Dani Diodato (guitar) and Joel Waters (drums), with guests James Akers (sax) and Jonny Liebeck (keys).
Joe models his practice on many of his influences such as Kurt Elling, Mark Murphy, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Jamie Cullum, Roy Hargrove, Chet Baker, Jamiroquai, Pino Daniele and many more.

Morrell, is a Hip-Hop artist and spoken word poet from High Wycombe, UK, and comes from the creative mind of Dan Morrell. From an early age, music took a front row seat in Morrell’s life; first starting Hip-Hop under the name, YungStar, and then changing to Morrell, once his music was refined and matured. Morrell first started around four years ago, and developed into a six-piece band, with friends from university. The band released ‘Placing My Statement’ & “Live To Tell The Tale’, and played shows under Gentleman’s Dub Club. While the band had success in their hometown, university ended and in turn, the band ended.

Morrell was then on hiatus from creating music for a short time, but is now back and with more honest, open and hard hitting lyrics than ever before. He mixes his deep and meaningful lyrics over classic Hip-Hop beats, and the two combine perfectly. His latest release, ‘Where You Been’, has been widely well received by fans, and visuals dropped for his latest track on his own YouTube channel, growing his fanbase organically. SBTV & Global Faction have featured some of Morrell’s previous work, including ‘One Of Those Days’, ‘Late Nights, Early Mornings’ & ‘Paper Chase’. BBC Introducing have showcased Morrell once again through radio and live performances, after the release of his latest single. Morrell doesn’t shy away from the reality that is real life and this is transpired through his music. His music makes you reflect and leaves you with the taste of inspiration in your mouth

Indie band CASCA released their debut single Paint Your Eyes in April 2019 after recording and producing the track at the legendary Roundhouse studios in Camden. Michael Brackla on the keys, Rhys Whomsley on guitar and Maeve Bluebell Wells on vocals - the trio met at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and share a deep passion for music. 2019 has been their biggest year yet with headline gigs at the Camden Assembly and at the Notting Hill Arts Club.
