The Phoenix Collective
Irish band
Faeland create songs for the spirit, folk-pop with a mystical Celtic edge.

Based in Bristol and Stroud, UK, Faeland fuse deep folk tradition and acoustic instrumentation, bringing an innovative and subtly experimental approach to contemporary music. They recently released their debut album, All My Swim, which has received support and acclaim from BBC 6 Music (via Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson), Uncut Magazine, Folk Radio UK and a host of others.

The band features some of the South West’s finest folk musicians, with singer Rebecca Nelson and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Jacob Morrison at its songwriting and musical core. Martin Solomon (Celtic harp, violin, accordion) and Lizzie Tucker (double bass) regularly join them live and in the studio.

Faeland is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Rebecca Nelson and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Morrison, a project designed to break them both out of their comfort zones and to allow them to do meaningful work, not merely start another band. Their combined efforts picked up steam quickly and led to sold-out gigs and a successful crowdfunding campaign. That led to All My Swim, an album that deals with the deeper themes of humanity like love, healing, and magic. Both Nelson and Morrison come from families of artists, creatives, and healers and this gives a natural quality to these ideas that would flounder in lesser hands.

The sound is acoustic guitars and basses mixed with drums, harp, santour, and violin. Ethereal, bittersweet vocals float across the mix and complete the picture. Echoes of Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, and Gillian Welch are detectable but the vibe is original and individual.

Faeland’s sound and mission pair up well together and create a beautiful vulnerability that is authentic and true. Songs like “We’re Just A Love Song,” “All My Swim,” and “The Wheel” offer listeners a seductive realness that rises above all the pushed product out there and must be heard and experienced to be fully understood. Faeland’s focus on positive impact and ample musical skills have the potential to touch the world if given the chance. Fans of well-executed modern folk will want to find this band soon, while it can still be seen up close.
Like all good things it’s taken some time for Firefay to take shape as a band. It all started with Carole & Béné meeting in London and writing songs together, with Adam's help on guitar and arrangements. Béné went back to France, and Carole finally decided to sing her own words. Other people joined, came and went, and some stayed, too. We wrote a lot, we discarded a lot, we learned a lot on the way. And here the contributions of multi-instrumentalist (drums, cello and oud) Seb and bassist Samir need to be acknowledged.

Storytelling, wyrd folk, Middle Eastern flavours, things that can only be defined as otherworldly, and still a bit of France somewhere in there. We call it Folk Noir.

We released an album with Alison O'Donnell (Mellow Candle) in 2014 called "Anointed Queen". This is coming out in vinyl in Feb 2016. We have a new album called "The King Must Die" available on cd an Itunes
Lanterns is a pseudonym of Jana Vargova, a London-based singer-songwriter and pianist. Her music takes
you into her world of self-reflection, contemplating loss and gain, roaming and
searching for home and fascination with the unknown...
